The community of Taloyoak shares its name with a large stone blind that was used by caribou hunters to herd caribou. Taloyoak is west of the Boothia Peninsula in the centre of the Northwest Passage. Taloyoak, formerly known as Spence Bay, served as a resting area for the explorer John Ross, who was trying to pinpoint the Magnetic North Pole in the 1830's.

The area is good for hiking and fishing. There are many artists, carvers, and artisans in the area.
