The community of Umingmaktok was previously known as Bay Chimo. The traditional language of the area was Inuinnaqtun, written using the Latin alphabet. Umingmaktok was constructed at an old Hudson's Bay Company trading post by Inuit families that wished to live a more traditional lifestyle. The area is said to be very abundant in wildlife such as arctif char, caribou, muskoxen and fur seals. A landing strip divides the settlement in two: a CO-OP store and the abandonned trading post on one side and the residential area on the other.
