The region capital of the Kitikmeot, Cambridge Bay, is a centre for business in western Nunavut. The traditional name of the hamlet in Inuinnaqtun is Iqaluktuttiaq, which means a good place to fish. Needless to say, outstanding fishing can be experienced in the nearby lakes and rivers.

The people in the community are active in government and business, and in helping tourists that are visiting the area for both fishing and great outdoor experiences. The population is 80% Inuit. In addition to the community radio station, Cambridge Bay hosts two CBC Radio One stations.
