Pond Inlet is located on the northeastern side of Baffin Island, along the shoreline, across from Bylot Island. It is known to the Inuit as Mittimatalik, “the place where Mittima is buried”. Although the name is still used, the identity of Mittima is a mystery to thecurrent people of Pond Inlet.
This community is one of Nunavut’s most admired gems. The gorgeous landscape is a mix of mountains, glaciers, and icebergs that attract many tourists from all over the world. Many outfitters will readily take visitors out on tours to see the abundant wildlife and spectacular scenery that Pond Inlet has to offer.
As per the Government of Nunavut’s decentralization strategy to create jobs throughout the territory, Pond Inlet is now a Qikiqtani regional centre for the Departments of Sustainable Development and Public Works. The community relies on sectors of government such as tourism and businesses involving arts and crafts and wildlife harvesting for future economic development. |
